The Training Centre located in Esenboğa Airport was founded for the training of DHMİ staff, as well as the staff of other organisations, on request. There are four theoretical training classrooms and six laboratories, each with a capacity of 25 students, Radar Simulator, Tower Simulator with 3-dimensional and 360 degree monitoring features, and pilot units in the Training Centre.
The Air Traffic Control Simulator System is the most
important component of the Training Centre and consists of Tower and Approach/En-route Control Units. The system has the capability of running stand-alone as a Tower or Radar Simulator, or running as an integrated simulator. In integrated mode, same scenario or same traffic runs from en-route to approach and to tower or vice versa, as in real time environment are possible. This integration capability makes our system unique among similar facilities.
Tower Simulator is designed to provide a 360-degree, 3-dimensional real tower view for seven Turkish airports.
To enable the student to feel real air traffic flow, real aircraft noise for every aircraft type and meteorological effects are given, synchronised with the scenario. The system, with its image-sound generator and projection components, provides realistic aircraft and vehicle movements, meteorological phenomenon, cockpit views, and visual and sound effects in accordance with the running exercise. Working positions are equipped with ground and approach radar screens, nav-aid and lighting panels, weather-notam display, strip printers and voice communication systems.
When only the tower operates, one supervisor and one pilot position are provided. In Radar Simulator, there is one supervisor, six controllers and six pilot positions, and both approach and en-route control training can be performed.
It is possible to run six different scenarios or one scenario in six different positions at the same time. The appropriate design of the radar work stations also gives the possibility of non-radar training. The present system, with its hardware and software, has the capacity for basic and advanced Air Traffic Control trainings. The map, exercise, airspace and aircraft editors are very easy to use and the database, with its flexible geographical coordinate entries, provide the opportunity of simulation for any region in the world.
There are also some facilities in this Centre for the training of DHMİ staff other than ATC personnel. These are:
- 1 training lab for security staff,
- 1 computer training lab,
- 2 electronic equipment labs,
- 1 AFTN/CIDIN lab,
- 11 classrooms.
In the Training Centre, there is a meeting hall and a briefing hall with a 104-seat capacity. In addition, there are 66 rooms with 128 beds (including bath, TV, refrigerator, etc) for accommodation. There is a restaurant, a café, a vitamin bar, sports halls, a billiards hall, a table tennis hall and a sauna for social activities.
