The General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ) of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Türkiye announced the air traffic, passenger, and cargo statistics for December 2023.
According to the data, the number of aircraft taking off and landing at our eco-friendly airports was 64,086 for domestic flights and 53,679 for international flights. This resulted in a total of 159,542 aircraft movements, including overflights. Comparing the aircraft traffic in December with the same month in 2022, there was a 7.1% increase in domestic flights, a 13.2% increase in international flights, and an overall 10.2% increase in total aircraft movements.
In December, the domestic passenger traffic at airports across Türkiye was 6,654,691, while the international passenger traffic was 7,703,145. Together with direct transit passengers, a total of 14,366,358 passengers were served this month. Comparing the passenger traffic in December 2023 with the same month in 2022, there was an increase of 10.8% in domestic passenger traffic, a 13% increase in international passenger traffic, and an overall of 11.7% increase in total passenger traffic, including direct transit.
The airport cargo (cargo, mail, and baggage) traffic in December reached 56,530 tons for domestic flights, 281,381 tons for international flights, and a total of 337,911 tons.
In December, Istanbul Airport served 5,840,813 passengers.
The aircraft traffic at Istanbul Airport for the month of December handled 8,559 domestic flights and 32,242 international flights, totalling 40,801 take-offs and landings. A total of 5,840,813 passengers were served, with 1,095,349 on domestic flights and 4,745,464 on international flights.
At Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport, the aircraft traffic for December consisted of 9,081 domestic flights and 10,465 international flights, reaching a total of 19,546 movements. The passenger traffic at this airport amounted to 3,110,315, with 1,418,493 on domestic flights and 1,691,822 on international flights.
Additionally, Istanbul Atatürk Airport, where general aviation activities continue, experienced 1,950 aircraft movements in December.
In the year 2023, the number of passengers traveling by air exceeded 214 million.
As of the year-end, the aircraft traffic at airports consisted of 868,467 domestic flights and 813,328 international flights. This resulted in a total of 2,167,019 aircraft movements, including overflights.
Comparing the aircraft traffic served by the end of 2023 with the same period in 2022, there was a 10.5% increase in domestic flights, a 15.8% increase in international flights, and a 14.9% increase in total aircraft movements, including overflights.
For the entire year of 2023, the overall passenger traffic at airports across Turkey included 91,055,014 domestic passengers, 122,950,966 international passengers, and a total of 214,232,985 passengers, including direct transit passengers. Comparing the passenger traffic served by the end of 2023 with the same period in 2022, there was a 16.3% increase in domestic passenger traffic, an 18.8% increase in international passenger traffic, and a 17.6% increase in total passenger traffic, including direct transit.
During this period, the airport cargo (cargo, mail, and baggage) traffic reached to 853,622 tons for domestic flights, 3,357,885 tons for international flights, and a total of 4,211,507 tons.
At Istanbul Airport in 2023, there were 506,055 aircraft movements, including 126,343 domestic flights and 379,712 international flights. The passenger traffic at this airport included 18,022,061 domestic passengers, 58,214,919 international passengers, and a total of 76,236,980 passengers.
At Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport in 2023, there were 227,234 aircraft movements, including 107,292 domestic flights and 119,942 international flights. The passenger traffic at this airport included 17,661,416 domestic passengers, 19,368,589 international passengers, and a total of 37,030,005 passengers.
Istanbul Atatürk Airport experienced 25,204 aircraft movements during this period.
In the year 2023, a total of 56,401,847 passengers were hosted at airports in our tourism centres.
As of the year-end, the breakdown of passenger services at airports in tourism centres with high international traffic was as follows:
Domestic flights served 17,402,849 passengers.
International flights served 38,998,968 passengers.
The aircraft traffic for domestic flights was 140,406, and for international flights, it was 249,947.
The passenger traffic at these airports in 2023 is detailed as follows:
- Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport served a total of 10,691,522 passengers, with 6,517,648 on domestic flights and 4,173,874 on international flights.
- Antalya Airport had a total passenger traffic of 35,538,387, with 6,334,004 on domestic flights and 29,204,383 on international flights.
- Muğla Dalaman Airport hosted a total of 5,247,488 passengers, with 1,791,574 on domestic flights and 3,455,914 on international flights.
- Muğla Milas-Bodrum Airport provided services to a total of 4,056,447 passengers, with 2,268,808 on domestic flights and 1,787,639 on international flights.
- Gazipaşa Alanya Airport had a total passenger traffic of 868,003, with 490,845 on domestic flights and 377,158 on international flights.
